Markham is the largest of nine communities in York Region with a population of approximately 287,000, and a land area 211.53 square kilometers.
This city is a blend of four communities - Markham Village, Unionville, Milliken and Thornhill and is located just north of Toronto in Ontario, Canada. A growing community with new housing developments and businesses, quality schools, parks and recreational areas. As such this city is a mixture of small town, with some farms in the area, and large town with corporate head offices for many world renowned companies.
It also claims to be Canada's Hi-Tech Capital with a number of key companies in the area, such as IBM, Motorola, Toshiba, Lucent, Sun Microsystems, Apple, AMEX, and home to the head office of graphics card producer ATI (now part of AMD). Markham has in total over 900 high-tech and life sciences companies. The life sciences cluster in Markham is fast becoming recognized for its innovation and expertise. The industries within the two sectors representing the largest share of employment base in Markham.
In terms of community events Markham celebrate through village festivals and special events (Unionville and Markham in June, Milliken in August, Jazz Festival in August, Thornhill in September; Markham Fair in late September; Santa Claus Parade and Festival of Lights in December).
